About Hawthorne Park District
The Hawthorne Park District, incorporated in 1927, provides recreational services and opportunities to the residents of the District. These services include various recreational programs, park management, capital development and general administration.
The District owns (and/or leases) and operates five park sites totaling 22.48 acres. It serves approximately 15,000 people. This results in a low ratio of 1.50 acres of open space per 1,000 persons.
Since 1995, the District has worked on increasing it's park lands. With the cooperation of the Town of Cicero, the District has been leasing through an intergovernmental agreement the 4.13 acre site known as Drexel Park South. Additionally, the Town of Cicero purchased a 5.19 acre site directly adjacent to the Hawthorne Sports Complex. A second intergovernmental agreement was entered into with the District allowing it to construct and maintain a state of the art soccer field and beach volleyball courts at the site.
The District copes with the lack of park land by maximizing the use of each and every park. For the fiscal year 2008-2009, the District has received two grants from Cicero Community Development Department in the amounts of $76,000 and $9,000. These funds have been used to improve playground equipment in various parks and install a fence around the outdoor basketball court at Community Field. The fence has provided a safer environment for those utilizing the outdoor basketball court. The District strives to make all the parks safe, attractive and accommodating to the needs of all segments of the population. This includes the elderly, the disabled, preschoolers and young adults engaged in all types of recreation, both active and passive, year round.
The Hawthorne Park District operates two buildings to serve the recreational needs of the residents:
- The Hawthorne Park District Community Building located at 5202 W 29th Place, Cicero, IL 60804 contains a gymnasium, a senior room (Milli's Den), and a banquet hall. - Drexel Hall is located at 3545 S 54th Avenue, Cicero, IL 60804 contains a banquet hall and meeting room and is used by the Concertina Club , the Polish National Alliance and area residents for various occasions.
